Narrative text

My Step Brother
Written by Ulva Khairani
I looked at him as he walks through the rainy street. His black shirt almost sopping wet, but he still walk on the street, ignored all of those vehicles, traffic jam, downpour, and me – a girl who walk around three meters behind, followed him secretly. Suddenly, he turned his back, stared at my shocking face.
“Stop following me, stupid girl! I’m not a kid anymore; I can take care of myself.” He shouted, full of anger.
I blanked for a few seconds, tried to calm myself down. ‘He just emotion, just emotion.” I said to myself. ‘He does not mean to hurt you.’
“I just want to -”
“What?! What do you want?”
“I -”
“Listen, my life was just beautiful before you come. You ruin everything in my life.”
“It’s -”
“Don’t say anything! Now I beg you, just shut up and … get out of my sight.” He continued walking after shouted those words in front of my face. I could not do anything but watched his back moved further, until his feet stopped near the traffic light, waited his turn to across the street. It needed several minutes before I decided to turn my back either.
Raindrop fell down onto my face, tried to camouflage the tears which flowed slowly from two of my tiring eyes. ‘Oh, come on, Vega, don’t be so crybaby,’ I coaxed myself.

Two hours before …
“Is she Vega, your younger sister?” a boy asked to a boy beside him when I arrived in front of a school. It was the first time I came to this school, William Dawes senior high school. There were some boys standing near the parking lot.
“Shut up, Edison. She is not my sister.”
“So?”
“She is … nothing.”
I was surprised when he said that. However, I still walked the way of him and tried to smile as cheerful as I can.
“What are you doing here?” he asked.
I put my hands in my pocket, let out something from it. He looked at a thing in my hand, and then wondered.
“This is my watch, isn’t it?” he asked. I nodded.
“But, why it’s broken?”
“I’m sorry …” I regret. “I just found it this morning, and I broke it accidentally.”
He sighed angrily. “You really …”
***
That boy was my step brother, Yohan, a son of my father’s new wife. However, he seemed does not like to be regard as my older brother. Well, my life was not like Cinderella story or such. I have a step brother, and I did not hope a prince would come and bring me to his castle and live happily ever after. No! I just knew that it only happen in a foolish children fairy-tale.
The reality was my foot step upon the solid road. I did not pay attention of what happened around me that time. Some pedestrians blundered against my shoulder, but I ignored it. I continued walking with my blankly head and these tears. Just walk and walk again without knowing my direction. My ear caught some noisy sounds, and suddenly …
“Watched out!!!” someone shouted.
There was a truck that ran fast on the road that I step on. I shocked, but my feet could not move easily.
“Akh …” I groaned. I felt something or someone drew my shoulder coarsely. The poignant came to my knee as I opened my eyes, and I saw him! It was really him.
He did not say anything, but looked at me with a strange expression. “Are you … OK?” He asked worriedly. Worried? Was he really worried?
“I am all right.”
“Are you mad? What were you doing? You wanted to kill yourself?” He yelled. My tears came out without my permission.
He looked at my trembling knee a few seconds and suddenly squatted in front of me. I frowned.
“Get up!” he ordered.
“You mean, to your back?”
He nodded. I was wary for a moment, but I just climbed his back up. He carried me on his back. We were silent along the way to back home.
“I’m sorry.” I whispered.
“Sorry for what?” He answered still with cold intonation.
“I know that watch was given by your father before he died, and I broke it instead. I know that watch is really important to you. Whenever you miss your father, you will look at Lilo.”
“How do you know that?” He finally said, ended his silent.
“I know that when you were kid, you really like Lilo Stitch, so that you named that watch as Lilo.” I smiled. “Forgive me.”
He did not say anything after that, but all I know now is I’m drowned in the warmth of his back. Maybe I do not have an endearing story like Cinderella; no prince would come to marry me, and took me to his palace, but who cares about it when I have a brother. He is my step brother and I love him, so much.
